Passion For Life.

Now is the time to draw the line

HFE bill; The results!
In the House of Commons on Wednesday evening (22nd Oct), MPs voted for the HFE bill, and all the devastating effects it will have on the sanctity and dignity of human life.

However, there is some good news. The government had come under enormous pressure not to change the abortion law, event though many extreme backbench pro-abortion MPs had been pushing for a mass liberalisation of the law for months.

The Passion for Life campaign would like to thank all it's supporters for distributing almost 2million postcards, attending public meetings the length and bread of the UK, emailing, writing, phoning MPs, and making it very clear indeed that the public do not want more liberalisation of the abortion act.

On the votes that took place, here's how your MP voted.  Please make sure you drop them a line to thank them if they voted how you wanted, or to express your disapointment if they didn't!

Vote 1; 3ZA(5) of the Bill creates a loophole which potentially allows human reproductive cloning, or genetically-modified babies which have had nuclear or mitochondrial DNA changed. 3ZA(5) could allow this via regulations to prevent the transmission of mitochondrial diseases.

AYES (wanting to remove the loophole from the bill that potentially allows human reproductive cloning)

The vote was lost (298 - 206)

Vote 3; Closes an animal-human hybrids loophole. The Bill fails to regulate embryos that begin as mainly animal but would develop so that they become predominantly human (e.g. via ‘tetraploid complementation’). Such embryos would therefore remain under far more permissive animal legislation; amdt 47 brings them under the scope of the Bill.

The Vote was lost (355 - 129)

Last few days to influence the HFE bill

On Wednesday 22nd October, MPs will debate the HFE bill in the House of Commons, and there will be debates and votes on issues regarding the sanctity of life.

Amendments have been put to the bill, including retaining the Human Reproductive Cloning Act, which this act repeals, further devaluing Fatherhood and Motherhood, the creation of genetically modified children, and possibly further destructive amendments to the abortion law, having the effect abortion on demand.

Now is the last opportunity to influence MPs by phoning the Constituency and Westminster offices, emailing the and writing to them to protest against this destructive legislation.

MPs can be written to at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA

You can phone their office via the House of Commons switchboard on 0207 219 3000

Massive postcard campaign underway

Passion for Life has launched phase 3 of its 'time to draw the line' campaign with a stunning new postcard, designed to highlight the new issues that have been introduced to the HFE bill, and to reflect the national concern there is over amendments put forward by extreme backbench MPs to liberate the abortion laws.

Ian Lucas, of the Passion for Life campaign, said "these cards can be sent to MPs to show the strength of feeling that exists in the country, against any further liberalisiation of abortion, and some of the other issues in the bill. Use the email address on the left of this page to email me to order cards, in any quantity to distribute to friends, family, church, clubs etc.  It's absolutely vital MPs, when they get back to Westmninster in early October know that most people believe that now is the time to draw the line".

It was the Bill wot lost it!

The shock SNP win in Glasgow East has been credited by many to the Governements hated HFE bill.  It is estimated that for up to 40% of voters, the HFE bill was a determining factor in how they voted.

Lord Alton has issued this statement;

"Not everyone who voted for John Mason in Glasgow East did so because of the HF and E Bill but, with a majority of just over 300, pro life votes were the ones that made the difference. They were enough to get him elected. He was the only one of the candidates who said he would vote against the Bill when it comes back to the Commons in the autumn; the only one who said he would stand up for the unborn child. It only takes a few hundred voters in key seats to change the political complexion of a constituency. MPs and political leaders should remember that one and a half million British voters have sent in protest cards to Parliament stating that they will cast their votes at the next election for candidates who cast their votes in the defence of human life. They will be enough to determine the complexion of the next Parliament and the next Government."

SNP victor, and new MP John Mason has said ‘the HFE Bill was a key issue for some people – part of the package of today’s result.’

Jim Dobbin MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group said; "It’s clear to me that the HFE bill was a major factor in how Glasgow East voted. As a Labour MP I say that with regret, but it shows that the delay to the HFE bill was a mistake that badly affected the result.

The HFE bill will now hanging over our heads until the Autumn. Voters in general, and in particular from faith communities cannot understand how a Labour government can force through such things as creating animal and human mixed embryos, saviour siblings and GM babies. In addition to all this the bill has given the opportunity to allow extreme pro-abortion MPs to further liberalise the abortion law, even though we already have the highest abortion rates ever".

Government delay HFE bill

It has now been confirmed that the HFE bill will not come before the House of Commons until October.  Jim Dobbin MP, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group has commented

'‘The news that the HFE bill has been delayed by the Government until the Autumn highlights the insensitive way the Government is dealing with such important legislation. The likely reason is the enormous public uproar the bill, with it’s hugely controversial proposals, has had particularly in areas such as Glasgow East, where there is a by election in two weeks’.

URGENT call to email your MP

The HFE Bill has already allowed the creation of human/animal hybrid embryos, ‘saviour’ (or spare part) siblings and the end of the ‘need for a father’.  Additionally, MPs have decided not to reduce the upper time limit for abortion.

The remaining House of Commons stages of the Bill will be on Monday 14th July.

Please take the opportunity to email your MP to ask him/her to vote against;

  • Liberalising the Abortion Act.  Some MPs are attempting to do this.
  • Human reproductive cloning.  The bill as it stands has a loophole which needs tightening up.
  • GM (Genetically Modified) babies, There’s concern that this could lead to designer babies.

It is also vital you ask them to support an amendment on the ‘Hunt test’.  This would ensure that anyone who wanted to create mixed animal and human embryos would have to prove that the research is needed, and that there is no alternative available

Please also ask MPs to push for free votes on all these issues at the remaining stages of the Bill, by signing Early Day Motion No. 1953.  Currently the Government intends to impose a whip, meaning that their MPs are not allowed to vote according to their conscience.

It is absolutely vital that as many people as possible email their MP AND the Prime Minister now, expressing their concernover these issues, as well as calling for a free vote at the ‘ Report’ and ‘3rd  Reading’ stages.

Please email your MP now – and as many of your friends and contacts and ask them to do the same.

See how your MP voted in the crucial votes...

MPs have now voted on the upper time limit for abortion, retaining the need for a father, mixing human and animals to create hybrid embryos for experimentation and creating saviour (or spare part) siblings.  All the votes went against the wishes of the majority of people in the country, and the objectives of the Passion for Life campaign.

See below for how your MP voted, and write to them to thank them if you agree, and let them know if your didn't.  Remember to consider this information when you come to vote at the next general election.

How your MP voted on creating Saviour (or spare part) siblings

Reaction to votes in the House of Commons;

Ian Lucas, campaign coordinator of the All-Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group, said: “We are disappointed MPs have not seen fit to recognise the wishes of three quarters of the population by lowering the time limit.

This comes despite pleas from many MPs to recognise research which has shown that children younger than 24 weeks can survive.

“This decision is ironic, at a time when the government is attempting to show it is listening and responding to public opinion. Regardless of reassurances of a free vote, Gordon Brown had clearly signalled his own preferences, thus providing many others with direction.”

“We will continue the fight to reflect the wishes of the public, and support the rights of the unborn child.”

Hundreds join the National Lobby of Parliament

An estimated 600 people, representing many thousands from all parts of the UK descended onto Westminster for the National lobby of Parliament, opposing the controversial measures in the HFE bill.

Passion for Life campaign co-ordinator Ian Lucas said ‘This astonishing turnout shows how strongly people fell about the outrageous proposals in the bill. It was an amazing site to see hundreds of people make their way to Parliament holding banners that spoke of ‘protecting the family’, and not mixing animals and humans to create mixed embryos’.

This was the latest event in a series of action days around the country as part of the Passion for Life campaign. Dozens of public meetings, some with up to 1000 people have sent strong messages, and almost 1.5 million letters and cards have been distributed for sending to MPs.

The creation of human/animal hybrid embryos, the removal of ‘Fatherhood’, and the creation of so called ‘saviour’ (or spare part) siblings are the areas of the bill causing greatest concern.

The lobby illustrated how outraged people are over the proposals in the bill, and the way in which the Government are introducing these unethical laws without proper debate, and by placing a 3 line whip on significant parts of the bill (items that would normally be considered free ‘conscience’ votes).

David Burrowes MP has described the speed at which the bill is being forced through as ‘bringing Parliament into disrepute’.

A large majority of people are also expressing outrage that after 18 years of not discussing abortion, only 3 hours have been allocated to the issue, which could lead to even more liberal laws making abortion even more common. This goes against the majority of people's views, especially as the UK is fast becoming the abortion capital of Europe with 200,000 abortions every year.

Ian Lucas continued ‘MPs will do well to take note of the strength of feeling there is in the country on these issues. It’s frankly outrageous that such an important subject as abortion should be rushed through the House of Commons. Britain is becoming the ethical rogue state of Europe for it's determination to push through embryology laws against public opinion, which are largely uneeded, and hugely controversial. Nowhere else in Europe are the laws so lenient’.

At the lobby, Lord Alton, and David Burrowes MP addressed the crowds, and recommitted themselves to continue to fight against this bill, and for measures that would enhance the dignity of human life.

What is the Passion for Life (P4L) campaign?

P4L exists to raise awareness of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (HFE) Bill currently going through Parliament.
On this site you will find info on the bill, what the Government is planning, and what you can do about it.

Contact us with any further questions you may have, and see the 'Web Links' page for lobby groups and others all working to oppose much of what's in the bill.  Check back daily for ongoing updates and latest news.

P4L Campaign objectives

P4L opposes the further devaluing of human life through the HFE bill

P4L opposes the creation of Human/Animal hybrids

P4L will oppose any amendments to the law that will have the effect of
making abortion easier.

P4L will propose amendments to the law that would have the effect of
making abortion rarer.

P4L opposes the removal of the 'need for a Father' from law, as proposed
by this bill, for any child resulting from IVF treatment

P4L opposes increased use of embryos in stem cell research, especially
where alternatives are available.

P4L believes all issues of conscience should be subject to free votes in Parliament, consistent with the original bill in 1990

'William Wilberforce would oppose the HFE bill and abortion'

"I am often asked what would be the campaigns Wilberforce would be fighting if he were alive in 21st Century Britain.  I believe there would be a number of different issues - among them human traffiking and the scourge of drugs.  But almost certainly at the top of the list, would be the issue of abortion" - Father Gerard Wilberforce, Great Great Grandson of the great man writes for P4L here.

James Mawdsley says "Get a conscience, MPs should have free votes"

Former Prisoner of Conscience James Mawdsley is urging as many people as possible to sign the Downing Street Petition calling for Free Votes on the HFE bill, allowing MP's to use their conscience.  The petition is here, and the story is here.
